What Is Family Managed Care, and Why Haven’t You Heard About It?

What is Family Managed Care?
Family Managed Care is one option within Manitoba’s Self and Family Managed Care program.
Under Family Managed Care, an eligible client’s family member takes responsibility for coordinating, managing, and directing the approved non-professional home care services needed to help the client continue living at home and in the community.

Following an assessment and signed agreement, funding is provided to the Family Manager based on the client’s assessed care needs. The manager may use the approved funding to employ care staff directly or arrange services through a home care provider.
Why Haven’t You Heard of This Before?
Most people are surprised this program exists. That’s because it isn’t well known or widely promoted.
If you’ve been assessed for home care by your regional health authority, Family Managed Care may have been mentioned briefly or not at all. As a result, many families assume they have only two options: public home care with limited control, or fully private care paid out of pocket.
Family Managed Care is the alternative. It gives you funding and flexibility at the same time.
Who Can Qualify?
You or your loved one may be eligible for Family Managed Care if:
• Ongoing support is needed at home, such as help with personal care, mobility, housekeeping, or meal prep •
•The person receiving care lives at home rather than in a facility •
•There is a designated care manager, such as a family member, friend, or even a care agency like Reliable acting on your behalf •
